Promotion on a large scale in every
nook and corner possible is the mantra today for Bollywood. Be it on
screen or off screen. When Ghajini was to be released, Aamir Khan went beyond the expectations and turned himself into hair dresser. He disguised himself in various avtars and gelled with the janta during the promotions of 3 Idiots. Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao personally went and signed tickets for the first day shows of Vivaah. Well, these are some innovative off screen promotion tactics.
But
today more than anything, the Bollywood prefers the medium of
television for their movie promotion. The popular actors reach each and
every reality shows possible as guests and promote their flicks. Several
actors have also been a part of the show for one episode.
Today if we switch on the television all we can see are the cast and crew of Barfi and Heroine in every show possible. Jhalak Dikhlaaja, Indian Idol 6, DID Lil Masters, Dance Ke Superkids; all we can see is in these shows is the movie promotions.
Actors being part of daily soaps are also not new. It can as a big surprise when Kunal Kohli decided to promote his movie Hum Tum on Yeh Meri Life Hain
when it was being aired on Sony Entertainment Television. The TRPs of
the episode rose to its peak during the promotions. The trend is being
followed even today. Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan were part of the episodes of popular daily soaps like Na Aana Is Desh Laado and CID. Vidya Balan was a part of the show Uttaran when Kahaani was about to release. Salman Khan was a part of Na Aana Is Desh Laado for two of his blockbuster hits Dabangg and Bodyguard. Aditi Rao Haidari and Ali Zafar were part of Zee TV’s Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein. Ranbir Kapoor was a part of Zee TV shows recently for the promotions of Barfee.
Bollywood stars appear as themselves also in many of the television shows. Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan were part of the popular television show Bade Achche Laggte Hain for The Dirty Picture promotions. And the same goes for Kya Super Kool Hain Hum. The team of Bol Bachchan was part of the Star Plus’ popular show Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain.
The
names will be endless if we start listing it down. Leaving the fact
whether the film works or not, being a part of a television show
definitely broadens your reach and visibility. Today with no medium
left, it seems like the film crew will have to look out for even more
innovative ways to attract more eye balls to theatres.
