WEAKING OF THE PLOT

Films like Bodyguard and Ra. One has made it to winner posts in terms of business. As an Indian living in a metropolitan, one wonders as to what the Indian, bollywood-hugging population really wants? Is it plain masala, action, item numbers or all the above with a pinch of romance and a music release of over 15 songs?

There are those once in a blue moon brilliant scripts like the one written by Vikramaditya Motwane, debut director for Udaan, where you have nobody in the audience criticizing the film, after shedding a few tears and having a young laugh. But that doesn’t make it to number one, does it?

How come a Ganesh idol; on top of a 4 wheeler; helping G.One save the day, sells more even in the 21st century? Is the Indian audience not matured at all as an audience?

The downgrade of the Bollywood plot is no secret. Acceptance of it however, seems to be going nowhere. ‘That Girl In Yellow Boots’ seemed to be taking the audience to a new level of sensitivity, but lacked the zeal a film demands. A good, not even great plot is what most films lack, be that the ace runner Bodyguard and Ready starring Salman khan or even no-gooders like Damadamm and Aap ka Suroor.

Taking good plotted films as a case study, isn’t it undeniable that the audience roar in laughter with simple, subtle and in the face humor like ‘Delhi Belly,’ enjoy and rethink life in a megapolitan watching ‘Dhobi Ghat’ and  respect yet enjoy legendary films that have made a mark on Bollywood being, Lagaan, Swades, Rang de Basanti and others. But how many of such films has the year 2011 seen? Ra. One was surely not one of them!

As Ashutosh Gowariker stated at the Literature Live festival in Mumbai, “We do not have the resources of say a 300 million Hollywood project and so we cannot pull it off!” But is pulling off a Ra.One and taking Bollywood to the next level good enough?

How many Indians sincerely enjoyed Dor? Well it had a brilliantly established plot, unmatchable, talented actors and a well narrated plot. Is the diminishing value for a good plot in Hindi cinema the reason for a bad plot in films? Are we as an ignorant audience demanding an even more immature plot? For now, maybe we should start by choosing to not go watch Ra. One.

THE MAKINGS OF A BACHCHAN

As an ecstatic Dadaji continues to tweet, Bollywood dawns upon the conclusion that the greatest filmy news for 2011 has just been delivered and the Bachchans’ have stolen everyone’s thunder!
The rumors have been wiped out and the Indian Bollywood-loving, frenzied population will now have to look for other places to entertain their mundane lives! Oh! Yes! The secret is out and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan just brought into this world a little baby girl. Like betted or gossiped upon, not twins or a baby boy, but a beautiful, Miss World Junior, will probably kick start the careers of the next generation of actors, representing the Bachchan family. She may probably move on to other interesting, prospective careers like mausi Shweta, but that would mean denying the entire Bharat ki bollywood paagal jantha the Bachchan legendary talent they crave for.
As Sr. Bachchan tweeted this morning, “I am DADA to the cutest baby girl,” India witnessed a revolution in its own weird sense. Twitterazzi and paparazzi swarmed over the news like drooling hawks and set into motion the uploading, printing and gathering of whatever they could get their hands on about the first grand, much awaited celebrity delivery, like never seen before in the bollywood khandaan.
Bollywood has finally seen it all, the making and breaking of a film star, the gossip surrounding bollywood families and the ups and downs of grand weddings. However, with the coming in of a baby girl, the Bachchans now have a new favorite family member to talk about and media to go ga ga over.
We’d all probably wish we had an insider view into the Bachchan family life. For now though, we should probably leave it to the little girl eventually figuring out the dealings of being born into THE bollywood family, where in the literal sense, the whole of India worships her dada and par-dada!

Reality v/s Reality

Jhalak Dikhla Ja, Kaun Banega Crorepati, India’s Superstar, Bigg Boss and so on… Indian television seems to have been attacked by the Reality TV’s bug. When they call it reality, we expect everything to be real, honest and as clear as crystal but often we have come to notice that, it is not the case. Today, judges with a lost, contestant feuds with lewd language, wild card entries with candid controversies, suspense with a baffling background score and anchors with less words, more glamour are all the indispensable ingredients necessary to conjure a ‘realistic’ reality show.

The latest buzz is about the reality show Bigg Boss season 5. First, the show created controversy with its contestants. The show invited someone like Nihita Biswas who is the wife of Nepali Serial killer, known as the Bikini killer- Charles Sobhraj; they invited a pregnant Sonika Kaliraman; they also invited one transgender, 13 females and one male contestant. All this not only created a lot of news around the show before it started, but even later every minute of the show is reported through various media. As per sources someone like Sonika Kaliraman was paid a huge sum to come on the show. Sources also say that now that she has opted out of the show, she can always come back as a wild card entry. So basically, everything is paid for. All theentertainment is staged in such a way that the audience gets what is promised…entertainment. So even if that means twisting the facts to suit the TRP. That is the reality behind the reality shows.

You believe it or don’t believe it is upto you but no one can ignore these reality shows. To have further updates on Bigg Boss 5- http://fridaymoviez.com/bollywood/news/amar-upadhyay-enters-bigg-boss-5/25300

FridayMoviez News Desk: The Lion King Roars again!

This week, things seem extremely topsy-turvy in the film business when a 17 year old animated Disney movie in its 2nd weekend again comes out on top and defeats a much-awaited new film starring Brad Pitt and a brand new heart tugging 3D family movie in more theatres than anything else!!!
But again “The Lion King” showed who is king of the movie jungle by squeaking out another first place win with $22 million on its way to the blu ray DVD shelves!
Disney had only announced this as a two week run to begin with but that well may be extended now that it’s picking up such remarkable trade! The ever-growing trend of releasing older movies back into theatres seems to be spreading now with Sony’s announcement that they plan to bring “Ghostbusters” back next month and of course the early 2012 re-release in 3D of the Oscar winning “Titanic” (a tie-in with the 100th
anniversary of the ship’s sinking).
A real treat in store for the movie buffs!

Roman Holiday almost marks the beginning of the movies in this genre…

While surfing channels yesterday I had almost given up on the fact that there will be anything worthwhile watching on the TV. Suddenly, I came across this movie… A black and white movie! I am not a big fan of black and white movies, in fact they literally put me off to sleep but then again I am a big fan of Audrey Hepburn and it was her movie- Roman Holiday. http://pliocena.com/ticket/hepburn/roman_holiday3l.jpg

The movie is about a princess who, tired of her fancy lifestyle and tired of being a princess, runs away and travels throughout Rome on a reporter’s scooter. The movie was a milestone, remarkable piece of work which received as many as Ten Academy Awards and Audrey Hepburn went on to win the Best Actress Oscar Award. Is the movie really worth so much appreciation or is it because it was first of its kind movie in the era when Royalties were present?
Well, both. The movie is really spectacular and marks the beginning of such movies. Chasing Liberty, the 2004 movie, for example was onsimilar lines but taking into consideration the present context. Instead of royalty, the girl is shown to be a daughter of the http://www.11points.com/images/similarmovies/chasi-first.jpgPresidentof United States of America, who runs away, tired of her constantly scrutinizedlife. More such movies which released almost at the same time were First Daughter and Eurotrip.
Such is the life of Princesses and First Daughters. Not a very lovely picture huh?
Well those of you who haven’t seen either of these movies, watch them and compare. They are very similar, very picturesque and yet, forme, the movie Roman Holiday is much more superior in terms of execution. The movie was old; no doubt, it lacked some specialized techniques, yet, it was much more straightforward and somewhere, it touched me. Watch all these movies and tell us which one you prefer…

The Book-Movie relationship

Books and movies somehow go hand in hand… Well yes, so many movies have been adapted, inspired or directly based on the books. Devil wears Prada, Shopaholic, Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code, Partner, The secret, Memoirs of a Geisha, Kite Runner and of course Harry Potter. But very few movies do justice to the books. The question is whether they are supposed to be exactly like the books; or, as a different medium, they have all the right to use their creative liberty?

HP_Blog
As a reader, it is so much fun to watch the characters from the pages of our books spring up to life. When we read about the Quidditch match and then watch it coming live through the movies, it is so exciting… A feeling of familiarity! But it is always debatable whether the adapted books should be exactly like the movies or should they just be inspired. Movies like Harry Potter are completely based on the books and hence people who haven’t read the books are often clueless about what is going on. The explanation for this which the directors give is that the books are too long and everything from the movies cannot be shown on screen. But there also are movies which portray the books beautifully and do complete justice to them. Memoirs of a Geisha and The Kite Runner are two such movies which have successfully adapted from the books.
MOAG_BlogWhat is your take on this? Should the movies be completely based on the books or should they take creative liberty to change the plot to make it convenient to show them in the two hours. Tough question…even tougher answer… Think about it!

FridayMoviez News Desk: Amitabh Bachchan waives fee for Hollywood debut.

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has said he will act for free in his
Hollywood debut in a new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
He said he had waived his fee as he was making a “mere one scene
appearance”.
The actor will play Meyer Wolfsheim, a Jewish man described as a gambler in F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.
The $126m film directed by Baz Luhrmann has begun shooting in Australia.
“The Great Gatsby” is the story of 1920s high society in the US, the golden age of excess before the Depression.
Writing in his blog, Bachchan, 68, said he had “refused any remuneration” because his small role in the film was a “friendly gesture” to Luhrmann.

Masala movies v/s the Intelligent movies

Current Bollywood cinema is not what it used to be a decade ago, it has undergone a volcanic change, and that is to say the perspectives of movie makers and the audiences alike have changed. There are a lot of movies now which portray the practicalities of life. In the 90′s when, there used to be a song sequence after every scene and the actors had superhuman powers, now, the makers have started to realize the need for a rationale that connects with the life of an average Indian. Strangely, no one realises that while saying that Indian cinema is undergoing a change, it is not “Indian” it is mostly just Bollywood. Malayalam and Marathi movies have always been very down-to-earth and simplistic. There was no over-the-top stuff in these movies ever and they often portrayed realistic events.
Bollywood cinema has become classier, or at least on that path already. But many fear it is not just getting classier, it is shifting from the commercial cinema to the art cinema or Parallel cinema. Acclaimed directors such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak are such directors who are part of this Indian New wave. As of today, Anurag Kashyap is one such example of directors who attempt the never-done-before things in the
Indian cinema. Right from his movie Black Friday, which was on the 1993 Bombay bombings to the latest movie That Girl in the Yellow Boots, he always tries to come up with something new, innovative. His movies are not just different when it comes to the story, but also his technique is always innovative. With Dev D he brought in the ‘shaky-camera’ effect to the industry (not that he invented it, he simply made it popular) and he also brought a bunch of new, promising actors.
So is it really that drastic a change? Will “Bollywood” cinema as we know it come to an end? Nah… Don’t worry! So long as commercial mass entertainers like Dabangg and Ready exist and so long as the melodramatic DDLJ type film makers exist, Indian cinema is not going to go under a huge revolutionary change. There will be a few directors who keep coming up with the artistic, intelligent movies, but after all pure entertainment is what we need and if it was not for “Character dhila…” or “Sheila Ki Jawani…” movies watching experience just wouldn’t have been the same…

FridayMoviez News Desk: Hackers Hit Hollywood!

Meet the Hollywood Hackers Coming For Your Nude Pics!
Reportedly, a new hacker gang is in town, and it’s not after government secrets. Instead, it’s going after movie scripts, Twitter accounts, and juicy secrets in the entertainment industry.
The group “Hollywood Leaks” has been breaking into entertainment industry insiders’ email accounts for the last few weeks and disclosing their findings, news blog Gawker reported.
Gawker said the group has cracked the email account of an actor in the upcoming Tom Cruise musical, Rock of Ages.
It said the group downloaded the script sent by director Peter Shankman to his cast, and put it on The Pirate Bay.
Also, it said the group had posted the cell phone numbers of about a dozen celebrities to the hacker-friendly document sharing site Pastebin.com, including those of Miley Cyrus, Lil Jon, and Ashley Greene. Gawker reported that during the recently concluded MTV Video Music Awards, rapper Kreayshawn had her Twitter account taken over by the group, which used it to tweet nude pictures stolen from her cell phone to her 300,000 followers.
Gawker quoted the “Hollywood Leaks” members as saying they are just getting started. “We’re currently sitting on several unreleased movie scripts, and enough numbers / emails to keep phones ringing and the inboxes full for the foreseeable future,” they said.

Dahi Handi no more just about the festival…

Dahi Handi… Gokulashtami…Celebration of Joy for the birth of Lord Krishna! What a festival, unique, vibrant and yet again colourful. There was a time when the mornings of Gokulashtami would start with the cries and shouts of “Govinda re Gopala, Yashodecha Tanhya Bala” (Govinda, Gopala, the baby son of Mother Yashoda)… Young kids used to run along the streets asking for water, getting wet in the water thrown from the balconies and pipes from people’s homes. It was something else altogether; the atmosphere, the mood, everything was just so different! But politics didn’t leave even the festivals alone… Right from announcing a heavy sum on the Handi to awarding different Mandals loads of money, they won’t stop at anything…
But this time’s Handi was much more than just political… It was star-studded and had a different cheer to it… John Abraham, Ameesha Patel, Udita Goswami, Neha Dhupia, etc… But just the presence of celebs was not what was different in the atmosphere; there was Anna fever everywhere…  John Abraham, who had come to Thane to promote his film Force, celebrated Handi with the Thane-aites. He not only broke the Handi which was said to be the ‘anti-corruption Handi’ with his head, he said, it is corruption that needs to be broken. He spoke in chaste Marathi and sported a Gandhi-topi in support of anna.

ABC introduced the new Charlie’s Angels to the Television Critics Association yesterday, 7th Aug’11. Rachael Taylor, Minka Kelly and Annie Ilonzeh play the new trio who’ll be solving mysteries each week, following in the footsteps of the ‘70s series and blockbuster movies.
The New Angels:
  1.   Rachael Taylor as Abby: (Abby was a rich girl who became a thief before Charlie recruited her.)
  2. Minka Kelly as Eve: (Eve is the newest Angel. An orphan, Eve grew up a loner and has her own skills to bring to the trio.)
  3. Annie Ilonzeh as Kate: (Kate was a former marine who got court marshalled. That’s when Charlie found her.)

Fans may know Charlie’s Angels to be full of action and sexy girls, but the main tradition they kept is the friendship between the three girls, and Bosley (Ramon Rodriguez).
Taylor says, “I love the action stuff and certainly it’s high octane and exciting. The viewers will be satisfied on all those levels but there is a genuine chemistry and warmth between the four of us. You can’t fake that. It bleeds onto the screen. That’s why we’re part of something special. We like each other.”

Once upon a time in Mumbai is Just like a soap serial

In the wake of all the terrorist attacks, many channels are showing movies which are related to terrorists and terrorism. I was reminded of this movie especially because somehow I didn’t like it as much as others appreciated it.
After our very own Raavan, another messiah for poor; menace for the police has stepped onto the celluloid. And this time, he brings with him a mlange of the Dongiri from Company and Gangster, the Raavangiri from Raavan, some parallels from real-life characters and a powerful flashback of the 70s era. This is what the Milan Lutharia directed and Ekta Kapoor produced, Once upon a time in Mumbaai is all about (Yeah, Mumbai is with an extra a; Ekta Kapoors K has lost all its magical powers and is replaced with an a).

The movie which is speculated to be based on the lives of Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim, the famous Gangsters, does run on similar lines, although it has a few moments of its own.

The movie is a narrative biography of the two gangsters who ruled Mumbai during the 70s, from a police officer’s point of view. The movie starts off with a police officer, ACP Agnel Wilson (Randeep Hooda), attempting suicide during the 93 blasts in Mumbai. The ACP is probed by his senior into telling him the reason for his drastic step and thus begins the three-hour long story-telling session. A young lad, who comes to Mumbai in search of work, starts working in some mine and slowly turns into a smuggler. This young lad is none other than Sultan Mirza (Ajay Devgn). He rises from rags to riches and believes in equality between the rich and the poor which is seen when he gives hoards of money to some beggar woman and asks for her best wishes in return. He is respected by the poor and feared by the politicians. He is a smuggler with principles (one of a kind), who smuggles only those things that are banned by the government (like gold, transistors, electronic goods) and not those that are banned by his ethics (drugs). This gangster with a big heart and smuggling-principles falls madly in love with a film actress- Rehana (Kangana Ranaut) and charms her by his chivalry. While his business is flourishing and his love blossoming, there comes another to-be gangster in the picture. A police inspector’s son, Shoaib Khan (Emraan Hasmi) is an obnoxious, egoistic kid who dreams to make it big in life. And the path for his dreams to come true is laid ahead for him, when his idol, Sultan, adopts him as his protg. This young gangster also has a lady love Mumtaz (Prachi Desai), who surprisingly is against stealing but doesnt mind her dear love working for a gangster. She is also apparently this shy, Muslim girl of the 70s, who is in a live-in relationship with Shoaib (Wah! There was live-in even in the 70s, then why such a hullabaloo nowI just dont understand!) Anyway, coming back to the story, although Sultan is Shoaibs icon, he doesnt share the thoughts of righteous gundagiri like Sultan. And this clash is the basis of their split and fight (not really, a slap from Sultan was the actual reason! What a reason!). Shoaib, hungry for more power, does everything that Sultan wouldnt do; he even shakes hands with their enemy. It shows us the circle of power- the one who is on the top, falls down one day or the other, and the one who is at the bottom, rises to glory (or crime). And in this entire power struggle is stuck our ACP Agnel.

The story has many loose ends. Rehanas sudden chronic heart condition, the existence of Shoaibs father, Shoaibs girl Mumtaz and most importantly the exact reason for the ACPs suicide are left unclear. In fact, the connection between the 93 blasts, Shoaib, and the ACP is lost somewhere in the entire melodrama. It looks like the movie will start at the point where it is shown as having ended.

Ajay Devgn has played his character very well although he slightly reminds of his character in Company. The Sultan- Shoaib relation is also like that in Company and such other gangster movies. Emraan Hasmi also has done a wonderful job but again, he also reminds us of all his previous gangster movies. Kangana Ranauts screen presence is absolutely stunning and glamorous but she fails in acting, and dialogue delivery (in her case its non-delivery). Prachi Desai is the only refreshing change in the movie and has given an impeccable performance. Her chemistry with Emraan Hasmi, although a little out-of-character for her, has worked wonders on-screen. Randeep Hooda has also played the role of an inspector on-chase (of two gangsters forever) very well. Overall, the acting side of the movie is really good and so is the music; especially the background score. It creates an excellent atmosphere complementing the theme. The movie is over-crowded with dialogues and all of them are very poetic and full of Shayari (which at times gets a bit confusing).

Overall, the movie is, what do I say....
Five bowls action, ten bowls drama, Twenty cups emotion, with amazing soundtracks sprinkled here and there and two table-spoons of acting....in short, an Ekta Kapoor serial made into a three hour movie is what Once upon a time in Mumbaai; or as my friend would like to say Konce upon a time in Mumba'a'i is.
