The Book-Movie relationship

Books and movies somehow go hand in hand… Well yes, so many movies have been adapted, inspired or directly based on the books. Devil wears Prada, Shopaholic, Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code, Partner, The secret, Memoirs of a Geisha, Kite Runner and of course Harry Potter. But very few movies do justice to the books. The question is whether they are supposed to be exactly like the books; or, as a different medium, they have all the right to use their creative liberty?

HP_Blog
As a reader, it is so much fun to watch the characters from the pages of our books spring up to life. When we read about the Quidditch match and then watch it coming live through the movies, it is so exciting… A feeling of familiarity! But it is always debatable whether the adapted books should be exactly like the movies or should they just be inspired. Movies like Harry Potter are completely based on the books and hence people who haven’t read the books are often clueless about what is going on. The explanation for this which the directors give is that the books are too long and everything from the movies cannot be shown on screen. But there also are movies which portray the books beautifully and do complete justice to them. Memoirs of a Geisha and The Kite Runner are two such movies which have successfully adapted from the books.
MOAG_BlogWhat is your take on this? Should the movies be completely based on the books or should they take creative liberty to change the plot to make it convenient to show them in the two hours. Tough question…even tougher answer… Think about it!

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has said he will act for free in his
Hollywood debut in a new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

appearance”.
The actor will play Meyer Wolfsheim, a Jewish man described as a gambler in F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.
The $126m film directed by Baz Luhrmann has begun shooting in Australia.
“The Great Gatsby” is the story of 1920s high society in the US, the golden age of excess before the Depression.

Masala movies v/s the Intelligent movies

Current Bollywood cinema is not what it used to be a decade ago, it has undergone a volcanic change, and that is to say the perspectives of movie makers and the audiences alike have changed. There are a lot of movies now which portray the practicalities of life. In the 90′s when, there used to be a song sequence after every scene and the actors had superhuman powers, now, the makers have started to realize the need for a rationale that connects with the life of an average Indian. Strangely, no one realises that while saying that Indian cinema is undergoing a change, it is not “Indian” it is mostly just Bollywood. Malayalam and Marathi movies have always been very down-to-earth and simplistic. There was no over-the-top stuff in these movies ever and they often portrayed realistic events.
Bollywood cinema has become classier, or at least on that path already. But many fear it is not just getting classier, it is shifting from the commercial cinema to the art cinema or Parallel cinema. Acclaimed directors such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak are such directors who are part of this Indian New wave. As of today, Anurag Kashyap is one such example of directors who attempt the never-done-before things in the
Indian cinema. Right from his movie Black Friday, which was on the 1993 Bombay bombings to the latest movie That Girl in the Yellow Boots, he always tries to come up with something new, innovative. His movies are not just different when it comes to the story, but also his technique is always innovative. With Dev D he brought in the ‘shaky-camera’ effect to the industry (not that he invented it, he simply made it popular) and he also brought a bunch of new, promising actors.
So is it really that drastic a change? Will “Bollywood” cinema as we know it come to an end? Nah… Don’t worry! So long as commercial mass entertainers like Dabangg and Ready exist and so long as the melodramatic DDLJ type film makers exist, Indian cinema is not going to go under a huge revolutionary change. There will be a few directors who keep coming up with the artistic, intelligent movies, but after all pure entertainment is what we need and if it was not for “Character dhila…” or “Sheila Ki Jawani…” movies watching experience just wouldn’t have been the same…

FridayMoviez News Desk: Hackers Hit Hollywood!

Meet the Hollywood Hackers Coming For Your Nude Pics!
Reportedly, a new hacker gang is in town, and it’s not after government secrets. Instead, it’s going after movie scripts, Twitter accounts, and juicy secrets in the entertainment industry.
The group “Hollywood Leaks” has been breaking into entertainment industry insiders’ email accounts for the last few weeks and disclosing their findings, news blog Gawker reported.
Gawker said the group has cracked the email account of an actor in the upcoming Tom Cruise musical, Rock of Ages.
It said the group downloaded the script sent by director Peter Shankman to his cast, and put it on The Pirate Bay.
Also, it said the group had posted the cell phone numbers of about a dozen celebrities to the hacker-friendly document sharing site Pastebin.com, including those of Miley Cyrus, Lil Jon, and Ashley Greene. Gawker reported that during the recently concluded MTV Video Music Awards, rapper Kreayshawn had her Twitter account taken over by the group, which used it to tweet nude pictures stolen from her cell phone to her 300,000 followers.
Gawker quoted the “Hollywood Leaks” members as saying they are just getting started. “We’re currently sitting on several unreleased movie scripts, and enough numbers / emails to keep phones ringing and the inboxes full for the foreseeable future,” they said.

Dahi Handi no more just about the festival…

Dahi Handi… Gokulashtami…Celebration of Joy for the birth of Lord Krishna! What a festival, unique, vibrant and yet again colourful. There was a time when the mornings of Gokulashtami would start with the cries and shouts of “Govinda re Gopala, Yashodecha Tanhya Bala” (Govinda, Gopala, the baby son of Mother Yashoda)… Young kids used to run along the streets asking for water, getting wet in the water thrown from the balconies and pipes from people’s homes. It was something else altogether; the atmosphere, the mood, everything was just so different! But politics didn’t leave even the festivals alone… Right from announcing a heavy sum on the Handi to awarding different Mandals loads of money, they won’t stop at anything…
But this time’s Handi was much more than just political… It was star-studded and had a different cheer to it… John Abraham, Ameesha Patel, Udita Goswami, Neha Dhupia, etc… But just the presence of celebs was not what was different in the atmosphere; there was Anna fever everywhere…  John Abraham, who had come to Thane to promote his film Force, celebrated Handi with the Thane-aites. He not only broke the Handi which was said to be the ‘anti-corruption Handi’ with his head, he said, it is corruption that needs to be broken. He spoke in chaste Marathi and sported a Gandhi-topi in support of anna.

Friday Moviez News Desk: Genre-Bending Kung Fu Movies!

The long-anticipated “Kung Fu Panda 2” has hit theatres this week. What was so fantastic about the first film was the way in which it incorporated kung fu into an animated family film! Many times Kung-fu manages to sneak into other genres. To celebrate Po’s newest adventure, we bring  you a list of some genre-bending kung fu films. It breaks down mathematically as follows…

Kung Fu + Sci-fi = Equilibrium

“Equilibrium” is set in a dystopian future wherein all emotions have been outlawed and therefore any and all material that would elicit an emotional response from the populace is considered illegal contraband. This leads to the destruction of priceless works of art, literature and even the slaughter of loved ones.  Kung fu’s inclusion into science fiction, is amazing to behold.

Kung Fu + Comedy = Kung Fu Hustle

Some films are just so bizarre that it takes you a few viewings to understand why they work so perfectly. The film is essentially a high-flying, wildly absurd martial arts farce. What is most surprising about “Kung Fu Hustle” is that, for all its silliness and great comedic timing, it has some legitimately spectacular fight sequences with arresting visuals.

Kung Fu + Western = The Stranger and the Gunfighter

If you have a hankering to see kung fu in the Old we would recommend “The Stranger and the Gunfighter”.  It is the tale of a kung fu master from China sent to the Wild West of America to investigate his uncle’s death. Lieh Lo brings the Chopsocky brand of kung fu to the saloons and dusty streets so indelible to the western genre. Lee Van Cleef, a legendary western action hero, plays Lo's counterpart to perfection

Kung Fu + Drama = Unleashed
This awe-inspiring martial arts drama is about a man raised from childhood on a steady diet of isolation and violence. Danny is a sweet, docile man-child who would never hurt a fly -- that is, while his collar is on. The instant his despicable gangster patriarch removes that collar, Danny becomes a lethal instrument of brutality. The fight sequences are brilliant.

Kung Fu + Superhero Flick = Legend of the Fist

Stepping into the role of Chinese legend Chen Zhen, Donnie is an absolute force of nature on the screen. The larger-than-life cinematography, the score and the fight choreography make “Legend of the Fist” a rare kung fu superhero film.

The miracle man- Rajnikanth.

Shonu, pappu, baby, lolo, gogo, dodo, etc… these and many such names are how our close friends or parents address us. Some of us cringe at just the thought of having a nickname (don’t worry I am not one of them) and they actually lash out at you if you call them such endearing (or just simpler) names. But nothing is impossible, especially when we are blessed with the miracle man- Rajnikanth.

When the entire world keeps sending messages about the oh-so-powerful Rajni, he has secured another feather in his magical cap.  Aishwarya Rai is the beneficiary of Rajnikanth’s miracles this time. Ash (oops, I hope she doesn’t read me call her this) has now been bestowed upon with a new name. Rajni has decided to call this young damsel by a different name. What might the name be… any guesses?
Ash?
Ashu?
Ashi?
Naaa…… All these names are ordinary, not up to Rajni’s standards… Rajni, as always, is hatke. He has decided to call this beauty ‘ Tamila’ considering her fluency in the language i.e. Tamil.  Now Tamila will definitely be obliged accept this name, unlike her other name ‘Ash’ given to her by the media, which she absolutely dismissed. After all, it’s a gift from the great Rajni to her.

FridayMoviez News Desk: NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL

Opening weekend for the 12th annual Newport Beach Film Festival (U.S.A.)
showcased crowded theatres, packed parties and high-profile celebrities!

Growing in popularity among Hollywood executives and local Orange County
residents, the festival's opening night, Thursday, featured the world
premiere of "East Fifth Bliss."

The comedy drew over 1,000 audience members into Edward's Big Newport
Cinemas. Including cast mates Lucy Liu and Peter Fonda.

Thursday's opening night was followed by a gala and fashion show held in the
courtyard of Bloomingdales at Fashion Island.

Following Friday and Saturday's film screenings, post-parties were held at
the Lexus Newport Beach dealership and the Sports Club LA-Orange County. The
jam-packed festivities were attended by the likes of film directors and
stars such as Colin Hanks.

Hoping to build off last year's 50,000-plus attendance, the film festival's
weekend galas and post-parties were aimed to not only entertain, but to
develop the Newport Beach Film Festival's reputation as a competing force in
the vibrant world of international film festivals.

With 350 films from 40 countries playing at this year's festival, it did
just that.

The selection of films ranged from a zombie road trip, "DeadHeads" and a Klu
Klux Klan comedy, "White Knight", to a bevy of action sports films,
documentaries and more than one world premiere.

"We really like to find some of the best films that haven't been screened
yet or picked up by a major studio," says Gregg Schwenk, executive director
and chief executive of the festival to the Los Angeles Times.

The widely eclectic selection is one of the reasons the festival appeals to
so many and is continuing to grow in prestige and attendance.

The festival ran through April 28th to May 5th, 2011.

Bole Toh…

“Hi, I am Rahul… Naam toh suna hoga!”

“Vijayyyyy, mujhe chod ke matt jayo!”

“Kkkk….Kirrraannnn!!!!”

“Kutte Kaminey, mein tera khoon pi jaunga!!!”

“Basanti…inn kutton ke saamne matt naachna!!!”

“Huhuhuhahahah… Mogambo Khush hua!”

These and so many other clichés or should I say milestone dialogues, have ruled Bollywood for ages. Those were the golden days of the industry, when people were less cynical, and even less critical. What was important was entertainment. Even then, there were many hits, many flops but movies meant fun, movies meant something to look forward to.

It has been so long since there was any interesting, memorable dialogue, act, etc… in our movies. NO more are there any characters which can later be mimicked- ‘Gabbar’s - Arre o Samba! Kitne aadmi the’ or No longer are there any dialogues which can be repeated- ‘So ja beta, warna Gabbar aa jayega!’

It is as if the industry has failed to create the same magic like the yesteryears. Some have still tried, like the Munnabhai’s mamu and circuit stint, or Kareena Kapoor’s innovative way of swearing in Golmaal…but these were just memorable for the time being, no one still talks Mamu style!
But with the latest movie Pyaar ka Punchanama, which has a 6 minute long monologue by Karthikeya Tiwari urf Rajat, things seem to be looking good for the Bollywood dialogue industry! The monologue is long and difficult to memorise yet it is one of the most memorable moments in the movie! I mean, come on, a completely entertaining 6 minute long dialogue! Who won’t remember it! Let us hope that we get more such memorable moments in the coming years so that we can look back upon with pride!

Friday Moviez News Desk: Water for Elephants!!!

Reel Review: Water for Elephants is a 2011 American romantic drama film
based on Sara Gruen's novel, directed byFrancis Lawrence, from a screenplay
by Richard LaGravenese.
It stars Reese Witherspoon. The film was released  on 6th May 2011 in India.

Plot : A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are
killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
This movie is more than just a love story.
What makes it more intriguing is a third character. The dynamic in the story
depends on August's (Christoph Waltz) jealousy of Marlena (Reese
Witherspoon), and her stubborn loyalty to their marriage contract. He rules
over everyone as a hard-bitten taskmaster whose easy charm conceals a cold
inner core.

Audience feedback:  Spectacular movie, just as life should be. This
masterpiece beautifully shows that life is all about daring jumping into it.
Beautiful metaphor between train and life. Life is not about illusion and
tricks, it about seeing reality in spite of illusions and tricks that
surround us. Good laughs and lots of intense moments.

This is good sound family entertainment, a safe PG-13 but not a dumb one,
and it's a refreshing interlude before we hurtle into the summer blockbuster
season.

FridayMoviez News Desk: Bin Laden & Hollywood!!!

Sunday's news that Osama bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan brought
closure to a nation still grieving the tragedy of 9/11. Deadline reports
that Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has been preparing her follow-up
to the film set in Iraq "The Hurt Locker", entitled "Kill Bin Laden", which
could become the first feature film to depict the historical events of May
1, 2011.

Previous reports were uncertain of how the Bin Laden angle fit into
Bigelow's film, but Deadline confirms the film's focus on "an unsuccessful
mission to try and kill the Al Qaeda leader responsible for the 9/11
terrorist attack on America as he hid in the border region between Pakistan
and Afghanistan."

Another film depicting the hunt for Bin Laden stalled a few years ago at
Paramount, but the events of Laden's death, should renew studio interest.
That project, based on Gary Berntsen's non-fiction book "Jawbreaker",
followed a failed mission to capture the terrorist leader in the wake of
9/11 and was adapted for the screen by Cyrus Nowrasteh

The heavily censored book detailed how close those forces came to finding
and executing Bin Laden in the rugged mountains of Tora Bora until they were
pulled back after a decision was made to let Pakistan tribal leaders lead
the search - a decision which experts felt helped bin Laden get away.

In any case, whatever happens to these film projects, Bin Laden's death is
an event of enormous magnitude and marks a historic emotional moment for
this generation.

London, April 25: Katie Price a.ka. Jordan has recently survived a fatal car crash in Argentina.

The glamour girl's car hit and killed two horses, which had bolted into her path on a remote country road.

Horse fanatic Jordan's toyboy lover Leandro Penna was driving at the time of the crash in his homeland of Argentina.

"I feel so lucky, but more than anything I'm just distraught about the horses. It was so upsetting,” she added.

Witnesses said the couple owed their lives to the fact that they were in a rugged vehicle and were both wearing seatbelts.

A spokesman for 32-year-old Jordan confirmed: "There was an accident and sadly two horses were killed. Katie and Leandro are OK, though understandably shaken."

The crash was about two hours north of Cordoba, where Penna's parents live.
