FridayMoviez News Desk: Hollywood’s Weekend Bad News...

It’s a widely-known rule of thumb by Hollywood insiders that the best time to release bad news is just before—or during—a holiday weekend. The news dump, as it’s called, is ideal for lessening the impact of a potentially large story because the public is likely not paying as much attention to their regular news feeds due to celebrations and vacations.

This 4th of July weekend has proven to be no different, as two such stories were released Friday.

1.       Maria Shriver files for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger:

The former first lady of California waited nearly two months after announcing her separation from Schwarzenegger, who revealed he’d fathered an illegitimate child with the couple’s household employee during his and Shriver’s 25-year marriage. Shriver, who is asking for joint custody of the couple’s underage sons Patrick and Christopher, signed the divorce documents June 18, but waited until the Friday before the Independence Day weekend to file time with the Los Angeles Superior Court.

2.        Linda Evangelista names Salma Hayek’s husband Francois-Henri Pinault as the father of her son:

The supermodel named Hayek’s French billionaire husband, the CEO at fashion company PPR, as the father of her four-year-old son, Augustin James Evangelista (who’s the same age as Pinault’s daughter, Valentina, with Hayek) in Manhattan court Thursday. Evangelista filed a petition seeking child support from Pinault after years of denying reports that he was the father. One might conclude that information obtained from Evangelista's Thursday day court appearance, perhaps knowingly wouldn't have appeared in the news until Friday.

FridayMoviez News Desk: “Cars 2” Tops Weekend Box-Office!

To the surprise of no one, a Pixar picture topped the box office in its debut weekend.

“Cars 2”, or as someone called it: “Finally, a Pixar movie that won’t make you violently sob in front of your children!”, weathered some surprisingly savage reviews to still debut with $68 million over the weekend.

The big question mark, aside from the obvious ‘how will the movie play?’, remains its 3D screens.

The film played 38% 3D, which makes sense considering the demographic and Disney seems to have played it smart by booking plenty of 2D screens since families with very young children are that much less willing to shell out the extra money for glasses that their kids won’t wear.

Alas, the film, no matter how successful, will start bleeding screens as soon as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” needs 3D screens on July 15th.

“Cars 2” took most of its 3D screens from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (which has now made more money overseas that any other movie save “Titanic” and “Avatar”) and “Kung Fu Panda 2” (which crossed $150 million this weekend, as it races towards $500 million overseas).

So “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” will take away its IMAX screens from “Cars 2” and                  “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” will start the 3D screen-theft process in just three weeks. Point being, even in its apparent 3D caution, Pixar/Disney may just have sacrificed long term play-ability for short-term cash flow.

Joy (?) of Parenthood

Celebrities are not just loved, admired, adored for their roles in the movies, but people want to know their favourite colour, car, their family, relationship status, etc… It’s like, it is not their life; it is people’s life. Aishwarya Rai  Bachchan is one such person who is always surrounded by questions. Who is her current boyfriend? When will she get married? To whom? Where is the wedding? What is she wearing?  One would have thought this curiosity will die down now that she is married. But No! She was not even married for a month and rumours of her expecting a child started surfacing. Now finally it is officially out that this beauty and her prince charming Abhishek are expecting a child.

The news about Abhi-Ash expecting their first baby has sent a wave of excitement among people. So now new questions will circle this family- Whether it will be a girl or a boy? One child or twins? Will the baby get mom’s eyes and dad’s height? Will the baby act or not act? The Bachchan family is being pestered with these and many such questions. Interesting part though is there have been many celebrity moms before but none of them received so much of attention. The baby is definitely going to enter this world with a spotlight always on him/her.

Friday Moviez News Desk: Winner of Sidney Film Festival!

THIS year's Sydney Film Festival concluded yesterday 19^th June ’11, awarding its $60,000 Sydney Film Prize to Iranian film “A Separation”.

Artistic director Clare Stewart ended her fifth and final festival with justifiable pride, and ahead of budget. The Sydney Film Prize was also established by Stewart.

The $60,000 prize is a boon for any filmmaker, though the commercial constraints on selecting 12 varied films within the prize's vision remain considerable.

The prize looks for films that demonstrate "emotional power and resonance; are audacious, cutting-edge, courageous; and go beyond the usual treatment of the subject matter".

"In our final deliberations we found two very different films about the relationships between men and women came closest to fitting these criteria," Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige said, on behalf of the jury.

A Separation "looks beneath the surface of relations between men and women in Iran in a way that raises questions about law, freedom and feminine and masculine honour. It is a courageous film, successfully executed."

The jury also commended Egyptian film Cairo 678 "for its courage in using a popular form of cinema to successfully communicate the frustration and anger of women in Egypt with sexual harassment, and their determination to change this".

Among other winners, “Life In Movement”, the documentary about Tanja Liedtke, the artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company who died tragically aged 29, won the $10,000 documentary prize. Pauline Chan's Chinese-Australian co-production, “33 Postcards”, a Sydney drama starring Zhu Lin and Guy Pearce, won the $5000 award for films with a multicultural perspective. Dario Russo, creator of the Italian Spiderman web series, won the $5000 Peter Rasmussen Innovation Award, the Dendy Award for Best Live Action Short went to Anthony Maras's “The Palace”; the Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director went to Craig Irvin and Ashley Harris's “Tethered”; and the winner of the Yoram Gross Animation Award was “Nullarbor” written and directed by Alister Lockhart and Patrick Sarell.

This is another step forward for a festival still re-establishing itself on the global film circuit.

The long-anticipated “Kung Fu Panda 2” has hit theatres this week. What was so fantastic about the first film was the way in which it incorporated kung fu into an animated family film! Many times Kung-fu manages to sneak into other genres. To celebrate Po’s newest adventure, we bring  you a list of some genre-bending kung fu films. It breaks down mathematically as follows…

 

Kung Fu + Sci-fi = Equilibrium

 

“Equilibrium” is set in a dystopian future wherein all emotions have been outlawed and therefore any and all material that would elicit an emotional response from the populace is considered illegal contraband. This leads to the destruction of priceless works of art, literature and even the slaughter of loved ones.  Kung fu’s inclusion into science fiction, is amazing to behold.

 

Kung Fu + Comedy = Kung Fu Hustle

 

Some films are just so bizarre that it takes you a few viewings to understand why they work so perfectly. The film is essentially a high-flying, wildly absurd martial arts farce. What is most surprising about “Kung Fu Hustle” is that, for all its silliness and great comedic timing, it has some legitimately spectacular fight sequences with arresting visuals.

 

Kung Fu + Western = The Stranger and the Gunfighter

 

If you have a hankering to see kung fu in the Old we would recommend “The Stranger and the Gunfighter”.  It is the tale of a kung fu master from China sent to the Wild West of America to investigate his uncle’s death. Lieh Lo brings the Chopsocky brand of kung fu to the saloons and dusty streets so indelible to the western genre. Lee Van Cleef, a legendary western action hero, plays Lo's counterpart to perfection

 

Kung Fu + Drama = Unleashed

This awe-inspiring martial arts drama is about a man raised from childhood on a steady diet of isolation and violence. Danny is a sweet, docile man-child who would never hurt a fly -- that is, while his collar is on. The instant his despicable gangster patriarch removes that collar, Danny becomes a lethal instrument of brutality. The fight sequences are brilliant.

 

Kung Fu + Superhero Flick = Legend of the Fist

 

Stepping into the role of Chinese legend Chen Zhen, Donnie is an absolute force of nature on the screen. The larger-than-life cinematography, the score and the fight choreography make “Legend of the Fist” a rare kung fu superhero film.

The miracle man- Rajnikanth.

      


Shonu, pappu, baby, lolo, gogo, dodo, etc… these and many such names are how our close friends or parents address us. Some of us cringe at just the thought of having a nickname (don’t worry I am not one of them) and they actually lash out at you if you call them such endearing (or just simpler) names. But nothing is impossible, especially when we are blessed with the miracle man- Rajnikanth.

 

When the entire world keeps sending messages about the oh-so-powerful Rajni, he has secured another feather in his magical cap.  Aishwarya Rai is the beneficiary of Rajnikanth’s miracles this time. Ash (oops, I hope she doesn’t read me call her this) has now been bestowed upon with a new name. Rajni has decided to call this young damsel by a different name. What might the name be… any guesses?

Ash?

Ashu?

Ashi?

Naaa…… All these names are ordinary, not up to Rajni’s standards… Rajni, as always, is hatke. He has decided to call this beauty ‘ Tamila’ considering her fluency in the language i.e. Tamil.  Now Tamila will definitely be obliged accept this name, unlike her other name ‘Ash’ given to her by the media, which she absolutely dismissed. After all, it’s a gift from the great Rajni to her.
